Glide

Self esteem and relationship building through developing understandings and skills in sustainability and global citizenship

What is Glide?

Glide is an Appropriate Education Initiative (AEI) that works with disadvantaged young people in Swansea.
It applies a unique approach to working with young people using two intertwined elements:

  • Supporting young people in developing self esteem and a feeling of self worth
  • Providing inspiring opportunities to develop skills and understandings in Sustainability (ESD), Global Citizenship (EGC) and Healthy Living.

Developing self-esteem

Glide incorporates the following understandings in its approach to working with young people:

  • Self esteem at the centre – recognising self esteem needs are key in providing a foundation for working with young people
  • Relationship and respect – long term strategy based on mutual respect and relationship building with young people and workers
  • Achievable tasks – providing opportunities where young people can succeed and take pride in their abilities
  • Participant led – supporting individual needs and learning styles, incorporating ownership and democratic values - having a voice and being listened to
    • High support levels – enabling safe and supportive provision

Education for Sustainability and Global Citizenship

Glide strives to inspire young people through providing real and relevant ways of living sustainably and respecting equality. This is achieved in a number of ways:

  • Innovative and interactive workshops – experiencing new skills and understandings in inspiring indoor and outdoor environments
  • Participant led content and method of enquiry – relevant to participants’ cultural contexts, interests, experiences and curiosity
  • Learning from the local community – real, tangible, relevant and regenerating a sense of local responsibility
  • Strength through diversity – experiential and diverse content ensuring varied and engaging learning experiences
  • Recognising interdependence – learning how things are dependent on each other, and how our lives are part of that inter-dependency
  • Making a difference – understanding how personal attitudes and actions can make a difference, tackling apathy

Healthy Living

On Glide young people develop the confidence to try things they never thought they could do and experience environments they may not have previously encountered. Learning how to cook and working physically in the outdoor environment are only small parts of this approach. Please ask for more information on Glide and Healthy Living.
